“Itna sannata kyun hai bhai”? Bollywood after Hangal’s death

“Itna sannata kyun hai bhai”?, the iconic dialogue of A K Hangal in ‘Sholay’ was recalled today on the death of the veteran actor as the film fraternity and political leaders hailed him as the “marathon man” of Hindi Cinema.

The Bollywood industry said Hangal’s demise brought a moment of ‘sannata’ (silence). The dialogue in the Hindi blockbuster was mouthed by Hangal’s visually impaired character Rahim Chacha in an emotional scene where silent villagers look on while a horse carries the dead body of his son killed by Gabbar Singh portrayed by Amjad Khan.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni and several chief ministers paid rich tributes to the grand old man of Hindi cinema, saying 98-year-old Hangal’s death has left a void which will be difficult to fill.

“Indian cinema has lost a towering personality, who was also a highly endearing human being. I convey my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family,” BJP leader L K Advani said condoling the death of “Hangal Sahab”. BJP President Nitin Gadkari described Hangal as a seasoned actor of the Indian film industry.

“A K Hangal no more. An era comes to an end. Theatre and films were enriched by him. Funeral at 1 PM near Pavan Hans opp Nanavati hospital,” actress Shabana Azmi wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

Filmmaker ShekHar Kapur tweeted, “A K Hangal. Lifetime dedicated to the art of acting in theatre. Will always be remembered by his films.”

Veteran actor Anupam Kher tweeted, “The Marathon Man of Hindi Cinema reaches the final winning post. We will miss you Hangal Saab. RIP.”

Ashmit Patel tweeted, “A moment of ‘sannata’ for the grand ol’ man of Indian cinema. #RIP AK Hangal Sahab.”

Hangal had amazing talent of creativity in acting, said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, adding his death has caused an irreparable loss to the film industry.,

“We have lost a strong artist and actor”, said Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

In his condolence message, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said, “Hangal was a Punjabi who left an indelible mark on the Indian cinema through his offbeat performance and charismatic personality and would be ever remembered by one and all for his unique performance both in Hindi films and TV serials.”
