Locals vandalise offices demanding steady power supply

Violent protests demanding steady power supply continued for the second consecutive day today with angry residents ransacking Railway Station, State Electricity Office, PHED office and Municipal Corporation at Sultanganj in Bihar”s Bhagalpur district.

Hundreds of locals took to streets and went on a rampage protesting the power crisis.

They vandalised the office of PHED and Municipal Corporation, besides burning tyres on the road.

They later ransacked Sultanganj railway station and burnt wooden sleepers of the tracks, disrupting rail traffic in Bhagalpur-Jamalpur section of Eastern Railway for more than two hours, official sources said.

They clashed with police, provoking a special auxiliary police (SAP) jawan to open warning shots in the air, sources said.

Situation was controlled following heavy deployment of security forces in the area, officials said.

The police registered an FIR against 900 unnamed agitators in connection with yesterday”s violence over power crisis in adjoining Bhagalpur town, the police said.
